NOTE: I posted this originally in r/bambulab but figured I should also post here in case that post gets deleted, because it is an important thing to consider. First off, I'd like to disclose that I am a cyber security professional.I think Bambu Lab showing the initiative and better securing their products is a good thing. IoT hacks are a major concern within the field and API keys should be restricted and only give to trusted partners and regularly vetted. While I understand these security measures may seem anti-competitive and "DRM" in disguise (DRM is a form of asset security), and reports of the private key and certificates already being leaked, I have not yet seen this particular issue discussed, which given the political climate, I feel is the greatest issue with this firmware update. As you all are probably aware, TikTok was/is/might get banned. This boils down to the accusation that TikTok's parent company, ByteDance being based out of China is a security threat. You also may be aware that DJI is also in the same boat. DJI may become banned in the US, due to accusations that their parent company is a security threat.Bambu Lab, being founded by DJI engineers and possibly being funded by the same investors could possibly put them in the spotlight for future sanctions. I do not have insider information about this or am saying this will happen. But should this come to pass, Bambu Lab would be forced to discontinue all service in the US. This firmware, which requires you to connect to the Bambu Lab cloud, would render all US printers inoperable should the US government decide to go this route.
