Once you progress far enough to have the camp manager Carl, you can then just leave items like armor or weapons that you want to keep, but don’t want to carry, on the ground somewhere and run away from them. You’ll then see the message saying said thing is “registered as missing”. At that point, you can go back to said person at any time and withdraw the item for ten silver. It is expensive, but it’s better than no long term storage whatsoever
