Do I update?

I know nothing about IOS and this type of tech and security stuff. I have an iPhone 12 and I'm running 18.1.1 and don't want to get hacked or anything. I don't really know how all this IOS hacking works. Can my phone even handle an update? I have 2 GB free, so I would have to delete like half my phone, and I also have 81% max battery, so..
