I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada hoping to travel to the French Polynesia (FP) in October 2026. Flights from Canada to FP are extremely costly. However I think I may have found a “hack” of sorts to save money which would involve flying from Canada to San Francisco (SFO) with West Jet or Air Canada, and then flying direct from SFO to Tahiti (PPT) with United Airlines. We would land in SFO on say, a Saturday afternoon, and then leave for PPT the following Sunday afternoon. So a 24 hour “layover” in San Francisco, but with separate tickets from separate airlines. My concern is with the current situation in the USA, will doing this be a red flag to the border officials and would they possibly deny us entry to the USA and therefore upend our entire trip? By doing it this way the savings would be $500-1000 per person, which is the only thing making it an affordable option for us right now. I just wonder if it’s worth the risk or am I just overthinking it? Does anyone have experience doing something similar? Any insight into this would be so helpful and appreciated. Thanks!
