Microsoft Tech Support Scam

full image - Repost: Microsoft Tech Support Scam (from Reddit.com, Microsoft Tech Support Scam)
I thought the days of people getting scammed by calls from “Microsoft tech support” about their computer having a virus or being hacked were long gone, but apparently not. An older guy (early 70’s) at our pickup soccer game today told us how his computer “got hacked” (likely a persistent JavaScript pop-up in his browser) and how he spent a bunch of time talking to “Microsoft” and “Chase Bank” (because they told him his bank account had been hacked also).Fortunately, it doesn’t appear he lost any money, as he eventually figured out it was a scam before going too far, but it was a startling reminder that 1) there are still shitheads out there pulling this scam, and 2) despite my perception that every adult who owns a computer has to know about this, there are still some folks who can fall prey to this scam. Just a reminder that Microsoft (or Apple) is NEVER going to call you because they noticed your computer has a virus. Never engage in a conversation with anyone you don’t know about your banking details, and never divulge your PIN to anyone, for any reason. If you are worried your financial accounts could have been compromised, call your financial institution at one of their published numbers, like the one on the back of your ATM or credit card. Maybe check in on your elderly relatives, neighbors, and friends and offer to help them if they ever get a call or text like this. I was really stunned my soccer friend nearly fell for it.
