The Greatest Coffee Scam That Isn’t Really a Scam

So a guy I know opened what was supposed to be a “handcrafted sandwich deli” earlier this year. Did okay for a bit — a few regulars, solid foot traffic, but just breaking even. Then he decided to “rebrand” it into an artisan espresso & brunch studio* (yes, studio) and turned the whole thing into a vibe. Added some hanging plants, jazz playlists, warm lighting, and a fake La Marzocco machine for aesthetics. Now he’s charging £4.50 for an oat flat white and £4.80 for a caramel cappuccino. Premium prices for a mid-tier high street. Here’s the punchline:All that “specialty coffee” is brewed from a £120 pod machine** he bought online. The pods cost 40p each when stocked in bulk. No fancy barista training. No perfect tamping or steam wand skills.Just press, pour, serve, smile. He literally hides the pod machine behind the counter, directly behind the £2k “display” espresso machine that doesn’t even switch on. Bought it dead from Facebook Marketplace just for the look. Genius. He’s pushing 200+ cups a day, which is over £18K a month** in coffee sales alone. Reviews online are glowing — “best flat white ever,” “gorgeous crema,” “tastes like Paris.” Meanwhile, I’m sitting here realising my guy hacked the vibe economy. He jokes, “people pay for the experience, not the extraction pressure.”And honestly… he’s not wrong. Smart business or mild deception? Hard to tell. But it’s definitely (profitable illusionism).[Also I need someone for software testing you will be paid with digital paid goodies for your work of only 20 mins max]
