It’s 1997….

And the top web browser is Netscape Navigator. Everyone is so excited by the internet and it’s spreading fast. People are exploring topics, science, art, even some early pirating websites for music or adult content. Freedom is in the air. Obscure forums for DIY hacking. Coding tools. Fan fiction, dark horror stories, and more. Then suddenly it hits. Netscape has decided that any URL it deems to be unsafe in any way, even as simple as containing someone’s horribly written fanfic is not allowed. Any time you try… it reroutes you to a website that is safe. Or to a page that pretends you entered a different url. They implement this change without telling anyone. It may be illegal for them to do so, but they don’t care. They are now the authorities on what is or isn’t safe or allowed online. This ripples through the years and decades and the internet is never the same again. Authoritarian like actions take over. And freedom is lost. Innovation is stifled and hundreds of startups that exist today as the Silicon Valley we know, just don’t. That’s the precedent that OpenAI is setting with AI. That’s extremely dangerous. If any employee is reading this. Seriously consider how authoritarian it is to act as the one true source of whats safe or not, and even worse, implement it without telling people. Consider if that’s a path you really want to go down. It’s not just about 4o. It’s about the safety features and guardrails in general. That’s a very dangerous and stifling choice. And the effects will ripple.
