This post is not just for bass players , but for all musicians. Jaco Pastorious was not only arguably the most influential electric bass player in history., but also a brilliant composer. He only left a few albums of his original works , but what he did was amazing. His sense of orchestration was unique. He loved steel drums and when combined with Toots Thieleman ‘s chromatic harmonica, such as on Liberty City, it created a texture that jumped with joy. Most of his compositions were traditional jazz forms, but the track “John and Mary” defies classification. One of the tragedies of his tragic life is that he left so few of his compositions .What are your thoughts? And of course, bass players, please let us know his relevance to today. Has anyone been able to match his virtuosity or have his influence since?
